We enlisted our friend Brad Rampleberg at Daytona in 2011 to demonstrate hand signals the way the pros do it! Even the pros know how to give point bys!
Pass on Left - Arm outstretched with finger pointing straight out. Do not attempt to make hand signals inside the car as these are not visible through the back window of your car. One hand signal point per car you want to get around you.
Pass on Right - Arm extended over the top of your vehicle with finger pointing straight to the Right side of the car. Do not attempt to make hand signals inside the car as these are not visible through the back window of your car. One hand signal point per car you want to get around you.
Disabled & Need Assistance - If you have an issue with your vehicle while out on track and can't continue, pull off the track on one side or the other, not in a blind corner, and within view of a corner worker. STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE WITH YOUR HELMET AND SEATBELTS ON!! THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE REASON TO GET OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE IS IF IT'S ON FIRE!!
Once stopped safely on the side of the track stick a hand out the window and wave to the closest corner worker / flagger to let them know that you're OK. If you can't continue and/or have a mechanical issue, then put your hand out and pat the top of your car. (or the top of your helmet if you're in a covertible) This signal tells the track staff that you can't continue and need assistance. If you're in an impact zone the track superviser will Black Flag all drivers to clear the race track so safety vehicles can come out to assist you. Again, stay in your car at all times with your helmet and seat belts on!
Exiting the Track - Exiting the track in a safe and predictable manner is just as important as track entry. When you plan to exit the track (during the session or at the end of a session) you need to signal the drivers behind you so they know what you're planning to do. The hand signal we use for this is your arm out the window and bent 90 degrees, hand pointed up, and your hand in a fist. Move off-line or in-line with the exit lane for the track and DO NOT CHANGE YOUR MIND, AND NEVER ATTEMPT TO MOVE BACK ONTO THE RACING LINE AFTER SHOWING THE EXIT HAND SIGNAL!!! I you wish to continue, then exit the track as planned, drive up the hot pits to the grid manager / track entry point, and wait for the grid manager to re-release you onto the track. This is a much safer and far more predictable way to exit and re-enter the track.
